Product Watch August / September 2013
I’ve been on the lookout for the lovely Killeigh farm sorbets in Aldi all summer, and now that the colder weather is creeping in they finally have them back in stock. They are now selling this lovely Tropical Fruits flavour as well as the Sicilian Lemon and Zingy Raspberry. Made by Killeigh farm, based in Offaly, means you are supporting Irish products and jobs which is a bonus in my book. Stock up when you see them as they might be out of stock again soon.
As my eldest is now a seasoned school-goer, i.e. he is going four weeks now, I am becoming used to making lunches and keeping my eyes peeled in the supermarket for healthy treats. There is a healthy eating policy in his school which I fully support but it’s not always easy to find ways to balance and vary his lunches. These humzingers have become one of my cupboard staples as they are 100% fruit, small, easy for him to open and he loves them. I am well aware that it is just sugar by another name, but I do like to add in one healthy treat along with his fruit and sandwich.
My older boy was 5 at the end of the summer and as we were doing a Monster’s Inc / Monster’s University themed party I was looking for ideas for toppings for fairy cakes. Any of the off the shelf Monster’s University stuff that I found contained a ready mix containing milk to make the fairy cakes so I ended up abandoning the idea. I have since found a generic fairy cake topping that I like. These fruit stars are fruit based jellies, I think they would look lovely atop some glace icing on a fairy cake. They are also in hndy bags as an everyday treat for kids.
By no means a new product to our shelves Innocent smoothies in tubes are a new staple in our fridge. As Glenisk’s new GoYos and Yoplait’s Frubes are very handy yoghurt tubes for lunchboxes. Unfortunately there is no non-cow’s milk alternative available yet. However Innocent Smoothies are 100% fruit so completely dairy free. As an added bonus there are three fridge magnets in each box. They have been on special offer in our local supermarkets most of September.
One more long available product which we love in this house. Glenisk’s Goat’s yoghurts. They are available in Banana, Peach, Strawberry, Raspberry, Vanilla and Natural. My five year old would devour 3 or 4 at a time if he was let. They are a good size for children, not too big.
