Recipe: Dairy Free Chocolate Brownies
|I thought I had the perfect recipe for brownies, that is until I tasted these ones! I googled dairy free brownies and the first link was for a BBC Good Food recipe which I hadn’t seen before. These were the fudgiest richest most delicious brownies I’ve ever tasted. And 100% dairy free.
Ingredients:
125g margarine
300g caster sugar
100g dairy free chocolate
50g ground almonds
80g cocoa
70g self-raising Flour
4 eggs
Steps:
1. Preheat the oven to 180C (170C for fan oven). Line a square baking tin with baking paper.
2. Break up the chocolate and melt with the margarine in a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water.
3. Stir until glossy and set aside.
4. Mix the flour, sugar, almonds and cocoa and then pour into the chocolate mixture.
5. Beat the eggs in a cup and add to the bowl. Mix until smooth.
6. Pour into tin and bake for 25 minutes. The top will be hard but inside will be very soft.
7. Allow to cool and cut into pieces.
8. Serve warm with dairy free vanilla ice-cream.
I’m hungry looking at these! My kids are not dairy free – presume we can just use any nice quality dark chocolate?
Yes they really are delicious! Says me with my cup of tea almost finished and my ‘taster’ one just eaten. I used Dairyfine ALDI dark chocolate which happens to be dairy free, you’ll find a lot of dark chocolate is dairy free naturally. Any dark chocolate should work fine though.
Great! we are not natural bakers in this house, so building up our repertoire slowly – I think this might be what we’ll make on Tuesday afternoon when I’m off work. I’ll let you know how it goes!
Good luck with it, it is quite easy. The kids will love licking the spoons etc. Do let me know :)
Laura, I’ve found the dark chocolates, although made without dairy state ‘not suitable for people allergic to milk due to manufacturing methods’ meaning they can’t be bothered to make sure there is no cross contamination. Therefore I daren’t eat any of them. Is the Aldi dark chocolate one without this in the notes? Fed up with eating something that states dairy free then find it’s been cross contaminated.
Hi Cathy, the Aldi dark chocolate one USED TO be a ‘may contain milk’ but now it actually contains milk! I posted about it when it changed but I am in process of changing older posts which mention it. For my boys most of the time ‘may contain’ is ok, a very odd time it seems to be cross contaminated. Unfortunately the warning covers everything from made in the same factory to actually it’s likely to contain small amounts. This is very frustrating as it makes it always a risk. If you want to be completely sure, then look for dark chocolate which has no mention of possible ‘may contain milk’ or for Moo Free or Plamil in the health food shop which definitely doesn’t have any traces of milk. Hope this helps. Thanks, Laura
Thanks Laura for the information re Moo Free and Plamil products. I’ll take a look.
ASDA do free from dairy chocolate buttons, chocolate bars and chocolate crispie bars. They are also gluten and wheat free.
Hi Cathy, you’re welcome, sorry for delay! The ones from Asda are probably similar size to the Tesco ones? It works out expensive for baking as you would need several bags of buttons/bars. But they are definitely an option. Moo free do larger bars if you can find them. I am researching a full post on chocolate but it will be a while before it’s ready. Take care. Laura
These look lovely! I might try to make them with the egg replacer my allergy baby has just been prescribed. If you fancy making dairy free truffles, check out he post I posted last week: http://lecoindemel.com/chocolate-truffles/ Mel, visiting from Tots100 Be Inspired – Chocolate
Hi Mel, I’d love to hear how they’d work out with the egg replacer. Let me know if you try them! I might chance your dairy free truffles too they look great!
These looks and sound fab!
Have you tried them with GF flour at all?
I’m afraid I’ve never tried with GF flour. We aren’t GF as a rule so I haven’t experimented with it too much. I would love to hear if you try them with GF flour.
Laura, This recipe looks great. Like the idea of using ground almonds. Will have to try it! Thanks.
They really are divine, let me know if you try them!
