Natural Born Feeder by Roz Purcell Review

Natural Born Feeder

I have been trying to make the family’s food choices more ‘clean’ and healthy over the last few months, Natural Born Feeder by Roz Purcell lends itself to this philosophy so I was delighted to be offered a copy for review by Gill Books. I’ve followed the Natural Born Feeder blog for a while and really like the recipes. Roz Purcell is coming from the point of view of someone who was making poor food choices who has turned this around to a healthy love of cooking fresh clean food.  This is what I aspire to do to help our family eat healthier and I have to say I am very pleased with the book.

With well over 170 recipes, I think everyone would definitely find something they’d like. There are easy to follow recipes for everything from smoothies, soups and dips to mains, desserts, snacks and treats. The book is like a bible for clean eating with not too many weird and wonderful ingredients. I’m not saying there is no quinoa or buckwheat, of course there is but the recipes are very accessible and any unusual ingredients are becoming easier to find in any case. This book is a great all-rounder.  The recipes are healthy, filling, clean-eating fare but most importantly perhaps they are everyday dishes, they are things we already like to eat, but made in healthier ways.

The vast majority of the recipes are dairy free, gluten free, vegan and paleo. The dairy free recipes have a D underneath so you can tell at a glance. On the few which are not dairy free, there is usually advice for how to make it dairy free by leaving something out or replacing it.

We tried the Kickin curry which is a take on chicken curry, all the rich spices and flavours come together to make a mild but very flavoursome curry. The boys lapped it up, it’s definitely going to be a regular weeknight dinner around here. It would definitely curb my hankering for an Indian takeaway anyway!

As with any cookbook, I love to leaf through the sweet treats. I found plenty of delicious looking healthy treats. Lots of clean versions of such old favourites as Toffee Pop biscuits and Viscounts.

So far I’ve made the popcorn brownies, one of the three-way brownies in the book. A very interesting flavour combination and the brownies very decadent considering they were sugar-free. An excellent healthy chocolate hit! popcorn-brownies

As usual I have been busy with the little page markers and I have plans to make homemade mayo, ‘the best stir-fry dressing’, salmon balls with lemon and dill and the creamy chicken and broccoli bake. For sweet treats I have my eye on the mini coconut rice buns which interestingly uses left over brown rice, pear and almond scones and the notella balls. I imagine this will be a go to recipe book in this house for a long time to come, and with the vast array of recipes I will find plenty to try out.
