Birthday Party Menu

We had a joint party for my now 6 and almost 3 year old at the weekend as their birthdays are very close. We ventured out of the house which is always a good thing as the house stays tidy (assuming it is tidy to begin with!), but I was a bit apprehensive as we had decided to have the party in the local park and I wasn’t sure how it would work out. The park in Askamore has a playground, a zip wire, a maze, a huge storytelling chair and plenty of picnic tables. For the party we were allowed use of the giant Jenga, dominoes and chess also. I also brought a small parachute for the kids to play with.

We were so lucky with the weather – it couldn’t have been better, dry and sunny for the entire day. Another thing that was left to chance was that the park wouldn’t be packed with other kids on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived at 1pm and it worked well starting so early as there were no other kids there at all until much later.

I have a rule for the boys’ parties in our house, all the food must be dairy free so they don’t need to worry or check when it’s their own party.

As it was a picnic party, all the food had to be easily packed and transported to the park, but I found myself with much the same menu as the year before. The food wasn’t served hot but nobody seemed to mind. Most of the sandwiches were eaten and all the sweet stuff was devoured. I think 6-year-olds are hungrier than 5-year-olds but maybe it was all the fresh air and exercise.

Party Menu:

  • Cocktail sausages
  • Mini ham sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches and jam sandwiches.
  • Sausage rolls
  • Original Hula Hoops
  • Burger Bites

For the cocktail sausages, sausage rolls and crisps check the pack to make sure they are dairy free. I had visions of making my own sausage rolls but I didn’t get time. Many packets of crisps that used to be dairy free have recently changed ingredients, it is always worth a quick check.

Sweet Stuff:

Everything worked great for our party in the park and the kids were occupied the whole time. We had a minor issue with forgetting a knife for the cake but we managed to get one. It might be a little less organisation to have it at home though. I’m sure I’ll forget all this next year and do it again if the boys ask me to though!
