Our 5 Favourite Christmas Story Books

We have a stack of Christmas story books, I don’t know how we’ve amassed so many but the number seems to increase every year. I love the ritual of taking them out in early December and storytime each night then usually involves one or more of them.  These are lovely presents to give and receive, and I especially love the ones with the dedication written inside the cover with the date and who gave the boys the book. Such a lovely personal touch. Here are our five favourites.

Fancy Dress Christmas by Nick Sharatt

Like Nick Sharatt’s other children’s books, the pictures are beautiful and colourful and the storyline is humorous. This one sees all the animals dressing as different Christmas themed costumes – angels and stars and christmas trees etc. My 4 year old is at the ideal age for this, and loves the pop up tabs. I would say suitable from 2-6 years old.

Aliens Love Panta Claus by Claire Freedman

Who wouldn’t love a story including aliens, Santa Claus and underpants! The giggle inducing underpants storyline is always a winner with my boys, and this one has the added bonus of Santa. I have been reading over and over for the 4 year old this year and the 7 year old still likes it too! Winner!  Suitable: Age 3-8.

Kipper’s Christmas Eve by Mick Inkpen

I love this book in which Kipper wonders whether Christmas Eve and looking forward and preparing for Christmas is as exciting than Christmas Day itself. We follow Kipper through his traditions on Christmas Eve. Lovely characters, nice feel-good storyline and leaves you feeling very warm and Christmassy. Suitable 2-8

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss

No list would be complete without an entry from Dr. Seuss, the boys love the Grinch as much as all the other Dr. Seuss books. The made up creatures and clever rhyming appeals to all ages, even to big kid parents! Another must for your Christmas storybook collection.

The Night Before Christmas

And my all time favourite, this beautiful version of the classic poem is so stunningly illustrated. I look forward to Christmas Eve to the tradition of reading this with the boys. It’s a continuation of a tradition from when I was a kid, we had a poster though which sadly hasn’t lasted to be handed down but hopefully this beautiful edition will.

You will find all these books in any good local bookshop and on Amazon.co.uk.
